University City was originally founded by Edward Garner (E.G.) Lewis.  He was an intrepid entrepreneur who over the years built a large publishing empire and ventured into other interests such as women's voting rights and banking. Our City Hall was the headquarters of his publishing empire.  He is responsible for The Woman's Magazine Building (Current City Hall), Press Annex (City Hall Annex), University City's Lion Gates, the Egyptian temple (No longer standing) and the Art Academy.

The History of University City

Edward Gardner Lewis posed for this photograph on the steps of the Woman's Magazine Building, next to William Bailey's lion sculpture. The Art Academy Building is just visible on the right.
